Book reviews, board game reviews, and whatever else gets written down.

About me

Illustrated portrait of Laurel Mercer

I copyedit trade nonfiction for a small regional press, mostly natural history and local history titles, which means I spend my work day marking up other people's sentences in the margins of a manuscript before I go home and do more or less the same thing to a stack of library books at night. I've been doing that job about nine years now. The reading habit came first, the job came later because of the habit, not the other way around.

I review the books I actually finish and the games my group actually plays, nothing assigned, nothing sponsored, no schedule I owe anyone but myself. A lot of what ends up here skews toward books that ask something of the reader, the kind where I put a sticky note on the stack labeled read this one slower, and games where I can follow the rules from the icons alone before I've memorized the text. I keep a small paper log of both, mostly because I stop remembering what I actually thought of something six months out otherwise.

Where I am: Asheville, North Carolina

Still working through the Culture novels in publication order, so more Banks is coming eventually, just not on any fixed timeline.

What's here

Book reviews, board game reviews, and personal essays. No schedule, no affiliate links, nothing sponsored. I write about a book or a game after I've actually finished it and have something to say, which is why the dates on here are irregular.
